TRIBE7 was founded as a collaboration between artist and Academy Award-nominated cinematographer Bradford Young, ASC, and motion picture camera and lens technologist Neil Fanthom.

Designed with a concept akin to the evolution of experimental music, each BLACKWING lens is based on an underlying level of distortion that is tuned to produce the desired resonance for the S-, T-, and X-Tuned series. Tuned parameters include sharpness, contrast, spherical aberration, roll-off, edge halation, and field curvature.

Used on commercials, series, and features with stunning visuals like Conclave, BLACKWING tuned lenses pair well with full-frame, cine-style cameras like the RED V-RAPTOR [X] 8K VV , ARRI ALEXA Mini LF , Sony VENICE , and the Blackmagic URSA Cine 17K . Cine-style features include a 14-blade aperture, 270˚ barrel rotation for precise focus pulls, 0.8 MOD focus and iris gears, and a 114mm front diameter across the series.

X-Tuned

“X” for expressive—designed to create dreamy, near-ethereal images with exaggerated halation, the X-Tuned primes have selectively uncoated edges that reduce contrast in harder lighting conditions. Slight spherical aberration and focal plane curvature increase the perception of shallower depth of field.
